President- John Shanks: Elected in 2015 we are pleased to welcome John to Dallas County Young Democrats Board of Directors. In addition John currently serves as Executive Vice President for Texas Young Democrats. John grew up in San Antonio and earned his undergraduate degrees in Economics and Political Science from UTSA. While there, he helped found a student newspaper, joined the fencing club, and saw how important access to higher education is for young Texans. He spent two years working with City Year, a program that places full time volunteers in classrooms with at-risk students for tutoring and mentoring, and began providing messaging and consulting to small businesses and candidates after completing his term in 2010.
Vice President- Demian Camacho: Previously served as President of the Dallas County Young Democrats (DCYD) from November 2013 to Feb. 2015. Demian, an attorney, obtained his law degree from U.C. Berkeley School of Law. While in law school, Demian served as an associate editor of the Berkeley Journal of Employment and Labor Law, interned for federal and state judges, and volunteered at a workers’ rights clinic serving low-income workers. Demian attended U.C. San Diego for his undergraduate studies and double majored in Political Science and Law & Society. While in college, Demian spent a semester in Washington D.C. interning for U.S. Senator John F. Kerry, where he had the opportunity to work on a variety of projects involving immigration and health care. Currently, Demian sits on the pro bono committee of the Dallas Hispanic Bar Association, where he organizes and participates in pro bono projects benefiting indigent residents of Dallas County. Demian is excited to be leading DCYD, an organization committed to advancing Democratic ideals and ensuring a better tomorrow for everyone in our community.
Treasurer- Lance Currie: Serves as the Director of Finance for DCYD. Lance is an litigation attorney at Carrington, Coleman, Sloman & Blumenthal L.L.P., where he focuses primarily on securities, construction, and legal malpractice. Lance studied theatre at Baylor before founding Second Thought Theatre in Dallas, now in its tenth season. While earning his law degree at the University of Texas, Lance worked for Texas State Representative Rafael Anchia during the 2007 legislative session, spearheading Democratic efforts to stop the implementation of Voter ID laws. Lance also serves as a Director of both the Young Professionals of the Dallas Regional Chamber and the Texas Young Lawyers Association. Lance is also on the board of the non-profit Texas Baptists Committed, focusing on religious freedom.
Secretary- Marie Willars: A native Dallasite, Marie grew up in Pleasant Grove where she attended H. Grady Spruce High School. After high school, Marie continued her studies at the Court Reporting Institute of Dallas. Currently, Marie is an Executive Assistant at Texas Capital Bank, where she’s worked for the past three years. Marie enjoys volunteering and giving back to the community. She has been serving as the DCYD Secretary since November 2013 and has been a DCYD member since January of 2013. Marie is an avid volunteer at The Stewpot.
Communications and Recruitment- Chelsea Roe: Has served as the DCYD Communications and Recruitment Director since November 2013. Chelsea attended college at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas and received her degree in Political Science and Creative Writing in 2011. While in Lubbock, Chelsea was a member of the Texas Tech Democrats and worked as a columnist for the Daily Toreador. Chelsea now serves as the North Texas Regional Vice President for Texas Young Democrats and works as Finance and Communications Director at Marc Veasey for Congress.
